Art Space Tokyo
We have engaged a range of participants, from designers, artists and thinkers, to engineers and researchers, who provide their own perspectives on the future. These ideas have been generated from the act of pondering timelines, whether familiar or yet unknown. The participants' ideas constitute the exhibition content, which manifests itself as "the Future in Plural Form," like a flourishing plant. Tokyo is not simply a sight by day and night, but a city steeped in culture, cuisine, and history.
Guide to Bringing Medicines Into Japan
The museum’s interior spaces are designed to adapt to a myriad of exhibitions and events. Modular elements and versatile layouts enable the seamless transformation of the museum, ensuring that it remains a dynamic and ever-evolving space. The structure, now considered to be one of Tokyo’s signature works of architecture, is impressive and beautifully simple in its aesthetics at the same time. It houses two floors, with the entrance and reception on the ground floor. A staircase leads to the ‘underground’ area, where travelling exhibitions are held. Set on the edge of Midtown Garden, which is located in the Tokyo Midtown complex, a large portion of the gallery space is underground.

Galleries, Museums, other exhibits
We cover all the basics including things to do in Tokyo, how to get from Narita airport to Tokyo, which JR rail pass to choose, getting a SIM card and pocket wifi. The impulse for the creation of 21_21 Design Sight originated during the Isamu Noguchi exhibition in New York. Designer Issey Miyake, architect Tadao Ando and sculptor Noguchi talked about the need for a place where Japanese design could be discovered, promoted and shared.
Co-founded by legendary fashion designer Issey Miyake and designed by architectural icon Tadao Ando, the exterior of this stylish Roppongi gallery is impressive. The Design Sight Museum is not merely a display space but a hub for creativity and design exploration. The building serves as a platform for exhibitions, workshops, and events that celebrate the diverse facets of design. From industrial design to interactive installations, the museum’s typology caters to a broad spectrum of design disciplines. In the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, amidst the modern skyline, stands the iconic Design Sight Museum, a testament to the brilliance of renowned architect Tadao Ando. This architectural marvel is more than just a museum; it’s a fusion of design, functionality, and innovation.

21_21 Design Sight is a museum in Roppongi in Minato, Tokyo, which opened in 2007. The design museum was designed by architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake. The building is on the edge of the park area and has 1,700 square meters of floor space, including two galleries and an affiliated café run by chef and restaurateur Takamasa Uetake. An installation space dedicated to design, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is Tadao Ando’s concrete contribution to Tokyo Midtown. But conceptually, it is closely interwoven with the ideas of fashion great Issey Miyake. Designed by architect Tadao Ando, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture.
What people unconsciously feel themselves drawn towards is what we here call The Original. It is next to impossible to conceptualize a design that is not in some way indebted to The Original,’ shared Naoto Fukasawa. This course explores the features, surface materials, and design options for rooftop deck systems and provides an overview of recommended planning and installation guidelines.
Building Typology and Use
The Original, however, does not only signify the "beginning" of a history of making. The Original is endowed with a fascination to ensure its lasting influence, and its essence will remain long afterwards. The name, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT refers to our wish to provide a place where people can look far into "the future". One hundred years from the opening of this exhibition will fall in the year 2121. Our concept is to ponder how the world will look in a year which is coincidentally also the name of this institute.

As more developments continue to bulldoze their way into Roppongi, the startling mix of old and new becomes increasingly complex. Strolling around the neighborhoods just west of Roppongi Hills will give you a sense of what the area felt like ten years ago. Lose a few hours in the free art library at The National Art Center.
It fits our concept that design should give life to the potential hidden within our daily lives. The distance between the numbers 21 and 21 is meant to be the space between human eyes, which describes this place as the "viewpoint" of design, i.e. Design Sight, and how important it is to observe things with a mind free of distractions. Instead, by reconsidering The Original, as a reference point and a clue to today's designs, we bring you timeless starting-points for design, and reveal links to the designers who created them. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has organized previous exhibitions on the concept of "design making life richer and more enjoyable, with the power to expand possibilities of thought and action." Important designs influence each other, developing histories. Nowadays society and lifestyles change so fast that we risk forgetting the very essence of design work.
Its twin is a single-story, 2,174-square-foot building containing a café. United by an exterior passage, these two halves of the project add up to a sleek, triangular figure that follows the lines of a public walkway rimming Midtown’s northwest corner. Both volumes abut the path with a rear wall of concrete, but face Midtown’s massive forms with separate, tentlike, folded-steel roofs, each one tapering to a point that practically touches the ground in front.
Open to the sky, the courtyard can be used to convey large objects to the lower level. More important, by creating a direct connection to the outdoors, this space serves to loosen up the interior’s corset-like concrete enclosure, allowing it to breathe. You can nab a ¥100 discount if you’ve visited the current exhibition at the Suntory Museum of Art, show your ticket stub at entry. The facade of the Design Sight Museum is a study in architectural expression. Ando’s use of concrete, with its raw and textural qualities, adds a layer of authenticity to the exterior. The play of light and shadow on the concrete surface throughout the day enhances the visual impact, turning the facade into a dynamic element of the overall design.
As visitors explore the galleries and engage with the exhibits, they become part of a narrative that celebrates the intersection of creativity, functionality, and urban integration. Furthermore, whereas its seamless steel roof and concrete walls could have made for a cold and overbearing interior, its trapezoidal spaces manage to be both futuristic and intimate. Despite seventy percent of the building being located below ground level, a large lightwell lets in natural light.
We lack even the urge to seek it out, as all is drowned in the superfluity of information. This exhibition employs a tool called "Future Compass" to trigger ideas about the future. We use it to visualize perspectives on a future which is already present today, and which can be uncovered through our contemporary behavior and creativity.
This area serves as a cultural hotspot, boasting a plethora of attractions beyond the institution. Visitors can explore the Roppongi Hills, a skyscraper complex that combines shops, restaurants, cafes, movie theatres, and the Mori Art Museum, renowned for its contemporary art exhibitions. The National Art Center, Tokyo, another architectural marvel, is nearby, offering an ever-changing lineup of exhibitions. In 2001, Tokyo Midtown began its transformation when Mitsui Fudosan and its partners acquired the former Japan Defense Agency site, focusing on “Design” as its core theme.
